2017 Charity Mission Recap – A Story by Chi Nguyen, BeCause’s Co-Founder

This is the 5th mission that BeCause team has put together since its inception. Each and every mission was a wonderful and impactful experience. I would like to share some memories from this trip with all of you because without your support and encouragement, this trip could not be possible.

September is back to school time and exciting month for the 1st graders who are attending school for the 1st time. BeCause team organized a 4-day mission to visit 7 schools benefiting from BeCause’s educational development programs. With the hope of promoting literacy and knowledge, the charity mission aims to equip students with both physical resources and morale support. From supplying textbooks and uniforms, painting library, setting up a computer lab, to organizing school opening day festivals, our team of 17 volunteers immersed in a lifetime experience filled with joy and happiness from the students and sincere appreciation from the teachers and parents.

The schools are located in Bac Ai & Thuan Bac Communes, the 2 poorest communities in Ninh Thuan Province of central Vietnam. Majority of students are from Raglay ethnic tribal group who are mostly living in the mountainous area and relying heavily on swidden agriculture as the main source of income. Due to the rough terrain, some students have to walk up to 6km each way to attend schools every day. Some others stay at the boarding schools and only visit home during the weekend. The team and I had an opportunity to eat lunch with the students at Nguyen Hue boarding school. A student told us that because of our visit, they had an opportunity to eat shrimp. It’s a luxury for them to have shrimp and normally they hardly have enough nutritious food. It’s breaking our hearts knowing that just simple and basic meal could be beyond their reach.

On the first day, we delivered 20 new PCs and helped set up computer lab at Nguyen Hue School. A student representing her classmates shared her thought with us: “This is like a dream come true for us. From now on, we no longer have to share 3-4 persons to a computer and can spend more time learning on the computer.” This project is made possible with the donations from Googlers and Google.org matching program. We hope to provide students better hand-on experience and greater access to the vast knowledge on the web. When was asked about Google, a student told me “it’s an answer to everything“. It’s a delightful response knowing that Google impact reaching even the very remote areas of Vietnam.

Subsequent days, we participated in very interactive school opening day festivals. As a person growing up in the primary education environment in Vietnam, this trip brought back so many great memories in my childhood and the excitement of attending school opening ceremonies. We had opportunities to sing and dance with the students, play games with students, teachers, and their parents, and best of all taste the ethnic foods that the parents prepared for a cooking competition. We felt welcome like at home and a part of their big family. We learnt so much about the culture, the people, and can see the hardship through their weathered faces.

What we really enjoyed working with these schools are their creativity and ability to make the best use of their local resources. An example of Phuoc Trung B School playground is made of mostly used truck tires. BeCause supported the materials while the teachers and parents contributed their time to install the playground. These simple games help attract students coming to schools and enjoy time with their friends.

I also had an opportunity to showcase Cardboard and let the students try out VR experience. They had never seen anything like this before and excitingly took turn looking through the lenses. It’s certainly an eye-opening experience for them.

The charity mission concluded with so many unforgettable experiences and stories to tell, but most important is that all of the volunteers leaving with a desire to continue supporting the students and contributing to our future programs. We also had countless teachers and parents coming to us and extend their sincere gratitude for our support and hope that we can continue expand our reach to other neighboring schools in needs.

As little as $5, you can help provide a set of brand new textbooks for a student or buy him/her a new set of uniform. In the upcoming year, we will focus on some major programs such as computer labs, bikes to school, and playground improvements. We hope you consider supporting BeCause For Hope during  this Giving Season. Your contribution will allow us to make an impact on thousands of students in desperate need for access to basic education.

Thank you for reading my story and together let’s make education accessible for all!

Regards,

-Chi
