About Our Champions:

Nguyễn Đức Anh

I am Nguyen Duc Anh, studying at Hanoi Amsterdam High School for Gifted student, specialized informatic honor class.

In remembrance of my childhood when I often listened to the song named “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, its lyrics remain in my mind until the present when I am aged seventeen:

“Sharing makes our life happy baa, baa

The more we share the more we have baa, baa

Sharing makes our life joyful baa, baa

Sharing is a way of caring baa, baa”

For myself, this song is composed not only for children but for adults as well. It seems to be a reminder to us of kindness and sharing. If kindness is spread far and wide, then how beautiful our life becomes! That idea has been motivating me to act to support the children in Ban Mu commune, Yen Bai province which is my father’s motherland.

My father was born in Yen Bai, hence I luckily have had plenty of opportunities to travel there, which is truly invaluable experience to me. Yen Bai is a province located in the northern part of northern-central Vietnam. I am particularly attracted to its wild and breathtaking beauty with majestic mountain ranges covered by vast green terraces. Whenever coming there, I am always welcome by kind-hearted residents. However, what has really perplexed me is the image of children who must quit school and earn a living to support their family. Despite extreme weather conditions, they wander outsides, selling stuffs to tourists. Those children deserve opportunities to go to school, to enjoy reading books and to explore knowledge, not a tough childhood.

I am lucky to grow up in Hanoi city and be equipped with good conditions to get access to education. And in my viewpoint, reading book is the most economical but also one of the most effective measures to acquire knowledge. Books are so amazing to be a guidance for us to enter the wide world. That belief has urged me together with my friends to sponsor a library at Khau Ly Primary and Secondary School in Ban Mu commune. I decided to donate all money saved from my scholarships to this project. Besides books, the library is also furnished with TVs, computers/laptops, bookshelves, and other equipment. Hopefully, more and more children have access to knowledge, and they can find happiness in reading books.

Although this project is little compared with the difficulties the children in Ban Mu commune are facing, my desire is to convey a message that people in poverty are still cared and shared by many others in hope that their lives will be less tough.

Nguyễn Bá Minh Khôi

First of all, I would like to send a warm greeting to everyone ! I am Nguyen Ba Minh Khoi, a currently grade-10th student from Nguyen Tat Thanh Lower & Upper Secondary School.

The summer holiday is about to come to most Vietnamese students, but I still haven’t had any plan for it which contributes to my boring and discouraging feelings. However, it was the time that I was invited to a team in a project which launched by the prestigious non-profit organization named BeCause. As far as I know, this organization is famous for a series of voluntary projects to help and support the unprivileged students in Yen Bai province in terms of education. My project was established to help the students in hardships of Khau Ly Primary and Secondary School (Ban Mu commune, Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province) by setting up a new library for them. After having a research on the project, I have decided to participate in it because of the following reasons.

First and foremost, I want to help the students who have difficult conditions. As can be seen from the statistics, this school have 967 students which are all from the H’mong minority. Besides, 52% of students them have families with low income, followed by the bad living conditions such as poor roads and harsh weather. On the contrary, about myself, I am a normal student who live in the Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam with better living condition. Accordingly, I would like to send a sympathy to students there and lift a finger to assist them to obtain their aim in life. As Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”, the way that our team chooses to support is providing the poor-condition students with better education by setting up a new library with the view to enlarging their knowledge and boosting the skills which are needed for self-improvement in the future.

Secondly, by dint of building this library, I want to spread out the reading culture. For long, reading books is considered a particularly beneficial activity to most people because of its positive effects on their minds. According to a series of study in psychology and education, not only do reading foster people’ horizon and skills, but it also do wonders for the emotions. Therefore, in many countries around the world such as India and China, the reading culture is always given high priority as well as concern from the whole society. Nevertheless, in Vietnam, the role of reading books is still underestimated because of a series of factors like busyness and the increasing popularity of mobile games. According to Le Hoang, vice chairman of the Vietnam Publishing Association, in 2019, Vietnamese people only read just over one book including textbooks on average. For this reason, I choose to be a member of this project to give a hand with popularizing the habits of reading in this remote-area school which can contribute to the development of reading culture in Vietnam and the omission of the Vietnamese picture with low rate of reading in foreign friends’ thoughts.

Nguyễn Trịnh Thái Hưng

All my life, I have read about Buddhism quotes: Charity bestowed upon those who are worthy of it is like a good seed sown on a good soil that yields an abundance of fruits.

I have a wish that I can do something to help the society become better, as now more and more people sustain difficulties in their life

I visited the mountainous area around Vietnam and witnessed children in the hilly area not attending school and therefore selling items on the street to support their families. I wish they understood the value of education to empower them, change their lives economically, and support their personal development. You might not have been born into the life you want to live forever. And that’s where education can help. By getting an education, you give yourself the chance to change your life for the better. Over time, your whole world can open up and new, exciting personal and career opportunities can develop. The role of libraries is vital, as students can have access to various types of books.

It is our main goal, to construct a library at local schools in the mountainous provinces, and provide them with knowledge and lessons. Giving pupils books that they enjoy is an excellent method to encourage them to read more. Students have significantly strong access to high-quality books in their language that is entertaining, intriguing, and instructional during recess or before and after school. This promotes independent learning, intellectual curiosity, and the development of a love of reading, and it is appropriate for the school setting, The impact on children’s literacy and knowledge that a library can bring about will last for a long. It helps enrich their imagination, as well as mental health.
