About Our Champions:

Nguyen Minh Thien

Nguyen Minh Thien is my name. I am a 17-year-old foreign student at Annie Wright High School. My experience in the United States began two years ago in Staples, Minnesota, a small, run-down hamlet. After 14 years of living in a city, this has become a tremendous problem for me. From living in a luxurious house and attending a massive school with all the technology and infrastructures like a pool and a soccer field, I am now residing in a town full of strangers and sleeping in a small, drab basement room. There wasn’t much for me to do, and the chances of pursuing what I desire are slim due to my situation. I was depressed and disappointed about my place at the time.

Fortunately, that sad moment in my life has passed, and things are much better now. And as I looked back, I realized that the place I was living in wasn’t that bad after all. There are houses, transports, parks, schools, and many other amenities, just not as many as there were when I lived in the city. And this summer, when I saw the BeCause organization, I witnessed areas that are far more isolated, poverty-stricken, and impoverished than where I was. I’m embarrassed of myself. Seeing those stories, those children who were born but did not have the opportunity to grow or the right to live like they should be,I feel inspired to act, even though on the other side of the world physically. My host family helped me a lot throughout my “dark phase” in the United States, and I would not be the person I am now without their assistance. “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up”. I got help before and I know the power of the act of helping. So now it is time for me to assist my compatriot, to support their ambition of escaping this terrifying circumstance that they do not deserve to be in from the start.

Thu Tra

Hi, my name is Thu Tra and I am currently a high school student at Tran Dai Nghia high school for the gifted

When I was a kid, the image that scared me the most was a kid my age walking around the city asking for help from strangers. That image terrified me, but it also inspired me to act. At first, my dream was to build a house for them to live in, but as I grew up, I realized that dream may be too big for me to achieve so I started doing smaller charity work- providing school appliances for the low-income children. The moment that I gave the children the pens and school bags, seeing their smiles is hugely empowering. It has promoted me to do more and more charity work. As long as I doing it, I’ve discovered more and more value in giving to others. It is not just about giving money or appliances to others, it is giving them small support, showing the kids that they have the attention of everyone. I strongly believe small changes can have a big impact.

With that in mind, I and my teammate would love to create a mobile playground with recycled materials for the children in Kien Kien Satellite Elementary School in Ninh Thuan. Where there are 75% low-income students and 100% of them are the minority. Besides studying, it would be perfect to have a playground where students can have a place to exercise to keep them physically active
