Francis Shelter Newsletter – July 2015

My days are unfolding in a fast and furious flurry of activities, meetings, phone calls and more correspondence than one man should have to handle.  However I realize that my time in Vietnam is slipping away quickly and there is much to accomplish and complete before my departure date on Aug. 13, 2015.   I just take a deep breathe and begin each day the best I can with the intention and hope of covering all the bases and details that need my attention.

The last month has brought forth many exciting developments in our overall mission and general scheme of things regarding our programs.  We have a  volunteer board of directors, a new volunteer coordinator,Joanna Mierzwa had her first “mini workshop”, entitled basic physical therapy techniques and principals in July and I started my weekly conversational English class.

At the end of July we had 57 basically trained volunteer caregivers.  With a little luck and God’s will we should have 62 – 65 basically trained volunteer caregivers in our group by the time I leave for the USA.  We have completed the profile cards and have 6 profile binder shelves (1 for each dormitory on order with a local carpenter. Funds for said shelving is safe and secure in our SFS volunteer group account.  We have also purchased 22 sq. meter’s of safety matting and it’s sitting downstairs in my house waiting to be transported to the shelter.  The safety padding will allow us to take even the most severely handicapped children to the play area for interaction with the other kids, exercise and a change of scenery.  6 paper cup dispensers are on order and the funds are being held in the SFS group account for that purchase.  The new bolsters and the new and improved “user friendly” child restraints are still waiting to be designed and manufactured.  Joanne Mierzwa (Jojo) our volunteer physical therapy techniques and exercise instructor, will be doing the follow up on that purchase.  Monies are in our SFS volunteer group account.  The SFS Library addition project (structure is complete), the pickup days for our donated book drive is scheduled for Sept. 5 in HCMC and Sept. 6 in Dong Nai.  Truong Con Chanh (Library Additional Project Coordinator) and Nhu Truong (board member – assistant to Chanh).  Mr. Chau has agreed to let us use his truck/covered van to pick up the book’s at all of the drop off locations.  Several of the women volunteers have asked to paint and decorate the library space, it appears that Mr. Chau is in compliance (Trinh one of our volunteers from the DB will take the lead on this project).

We are starting a work study program with the focus on educators / university students (teachers, trainers of all types, and healing/medical practitioners).  They will come to the shelter and will spend a minimum of 2 weeks at a time and hopefully longer as live in volunteers sharing their skills and hearts, teaching, training and/or working with the residents.

Thank you for your support, encouragement and for believing in our project and programs at the SFS.
