We completed our 2nd basic care giving training on last Saturday, it was awesome.
There were 30 Deutsche Bank employees and family members that were present for the event. The total number of volunteer attendees that completed the basic caregiving training was 19. That brings our volunteer group of basically trained caregivers up to nearly 55 volunteers. We only need 20 more volunteers to meet the higher end of my proposed volunteer recruitment numbers by the time I’m ready to return to the USA in August.
We explored and experimented with a different format with this training class. On Friday afternoon the DB hosted the first portion of the training at their offices in downtown Saigon and then we completed the training on Saturday in Dong Nai at the shelter. The response was fantastic and the training went really well! By Saturday afternoon everyone in the class was working and connecting with the residents without fear or doubt about their abilities.
I returned to the shelter on today (Sunday) and will be heading their again tomorrow on Monday (regular work day) and then I will be taking a much needed break until my next basic care giving training on June 13, 2015.
The gathering on Sunday consisted of 7 people including myself. There was Huong and Hang (basic caregiving volunteers) returning for another spontaneous work day, Azrael Jeffery, his wife Nia.and Minh and Thao. Azrael is a psychologist and has nearly completed his Doctorate in Psychology. We have been communicating for about a month and he finally was able to break free from his new practice to visit the shelter for an informal evaluation. She came on the request of her friend Thao who is a project officer for the IECD – NGO/Non-profit group in HCMC. Minh and Thao have both said that they will write a synopsis of their findings. They both have stated that they definitely would like to be involved, however it may be limited. Minh has offered to do some expanding training for our basically trained volunteers.
There of course is still a mountain of things that need attention and change at the shelter. We are working on that aspect diligently and with a little luck and God’s will we will be successful in fulfilling our mission and goals for this year.
