Francis Shelter Newsletter – May 2015

We are inspired by Philip York!  Three months ago Philip thoughtfully expressed his interest in a volunteer opportunity in which he was required to take a leap of faith with a temporarily move 8,000 miles from California to a foreign country of Vietnam in hope to improve the standard of living for nearly 100 unfortunate physically and mentally disabled children, as well as seniors at St. Francis shelter. Despite the unknown environment and many uncertainties, Philip immersed himself in many difficult tasks, one of which is to implement new and improved standardized set of caregiving procedures and protocols at the shelter.  Our program aimed to transpire hope and promote physical, social-emotional developments, and positive learning environment for the neglected residents through improved care. Through Philip’s leadership in spearheading this comprehensive program, as well as outpouring dedication from many compassionate local and foreign volunteers, we are progressing successfully, though rather slowly due to the amount of work, not only to change the stigma of mental and physical illnesses in Vietnam, but to develop new strategies to effectively achieve our goals. We sincerely thank you for the surmounting work you and your team of volunteers have contributed Philip! ————————————————————- Greetings and salutations to you my fellow volunteer associates, On Monday we had a most excellent day at the shelter. There were 7 of us working with as many of the residents as possible. Jojo led an exercise class for the seniors with nearly everyone’s involvement and the end result was a bunch of happy and hopeful senior residents. Tammy continues to work on profile cards, with the assistance of Hieu who does all translation work. The profile cards Tammy is working on creating for each of the residents are going to be incredibly useful. Basically whenever one of the volunteers works with a resident or initiates a treatment/therapy program it will be documented. Thus, whatever one of us accomplishes or discovers with an individual resident, that information will be available to all of us. Tammy had the idea of gathering as many of the children as we could handle, and take them to the enclosed play area with the goal of supporting them with a change of scenery from their normally gloomy surroundings, where they could walk, sit up, crawl, and otherwise move around in a playful environment – the kinds of things other children do. What a concept! The rest of us (Paige, Gabby, Scott and myself) joined Tammy and provided the supervision, safety and general support for anywhere from 8 -10 of the children. Our merry band also fed a good number of the children, all of which were sitting up through most of the feeding ritual. It was an awesome sight and the whole process was managed in an efficient, respectful way. No doubt the regular volunteers were taking notice of our enthusiasm and dedication. Later that day, Hieu and Philip (accompanied by Tieng – the really big kid), encouraged Twee, one of the mentally challenged young women in the lower dungeon to go for a walk outside. We were hoping that Lan, Twee’s cell-mate would join us. However she was not quite ready for that kind of an excursion. We walked about arm in arm with Twee for about 30 minutes. She had a smile on her face from ear to ear enjoying the natural environment while chit chatting and sharing girl talk with Hieu. The little walkabout was lovely and was completely obvious the positive impact that it had on Twee. I won’t soon forget the smile on her face and sparkle in her eyes. Supervised walks should be a daily part of her therapy and healing regiment. Scott was awesome as he accompanied the rest of the volunteers for the last hour or so in the children’s dorm. His tenderness, kindness and attention to the small details was transferred to the children he engaged with the same focus and big heart that he demonstrates with his photography and video work. Gabby and Paige although only had a couple of hours to dedicate to the residents due to other commitments, they made a special impression just the same, spreading their love and kindness while touching and working with as many residents before their departure. Jojo’s big and over the top loving, caring energy permeated the room as she circulated working with the children non-stop, sitting them up, hugging them, encouraging them to walk, infusing all whom she touched with a surge of hope and a sense of worthiness. There is still much to do…. An almost endless job. Many of the other residents are suffering with severe dryness. So as a suggestion, let’s all pay attention too and remember to hydrate the residents by giving them water, especially the ones that need our assistance, as much as possible. When you are planning your treatment and therapy programs on any given visit, remember to bring some oil and apply it to the residents who are suffering the most. Manicures, pedicures, walk abouts, sitting them up, getting them up and moving, engage in sweet conversations with those who can communicate verbally, give massages, work and exercise their diseased or injured limbs.. Whatever….. They need everything. But most of all they need our love!  Love will set them free from their chronic depression and past disappointments, hopelessness and despair. Love will give them a reason to hope. I’m honored beyond belief to be working with and associated with all of you in our volunteer group. Your demonstrations of kindness, compassion and love are shifting the gloom and doom persona of the shelter from days past. Along with your commitment and willingness to give of yourself and your time freely is exactly what is needed to up level the standards of care and improve the quality of life at the shelter. Please keep going to the shelter as often as you can. I can assure lives are being transformed and smiles of hope are emerging more and more with each visit we make. Love your buddy, Philip
